EXPORT LACQUERED AND HAND PAINTED WOODEN GAME BOX. Chinese, 2nd h. 19th c. 12 x 31 x 38 cm. Foliated lengthened octagon form, raised on four gilt claw supports, the hinged lid opening to reveal 7 covered boxes, the lids of which are all painted by hand w. rural scenes, and 2 stacks of 4 small trays painted w. the faces of playing cards, one of which with the word 'GAME'. (Paint work a bit dam. and chipped on the outside (espec. the upper lid)).
With numerous multi-shaped mother-of-pearl game pieces monogrammed 'C.v.d.W.' which stands for Carel Herman Aart van der Wijck (1840-1914), i.a. governor-general of the Dutch East Indies. Probably presented as a gift on some occasion.€ 500
