EPISTOLARUM obscurorum virorum ad M. Ortuinum Gratium volumina omnia. Frankfurt, J.A. Raspe, 1757. 2 in 1 vol. (8), 374; (2), 448 pp. W. 2 engr. front.-portrs. (of Hutten to the first, of Erasmus to the second vol.) & 10 o. engr. portrs. Sm-8°. Mod. cl. (A bit browned/foxed as usual).
The most famous humanistic satire in epistolary form by various authors, among whom Ulrich von Hutten and Crotus Rubianus. In terrible dog-latin the letters satirize the ignorance, the pretentious sophistry, the worldly dissipation and the arrogance of the monks and the "obscurants" (Dunkelmänner), thus contributing substantially to the rise of the Reformation. This is the most complete edition, enriched with hilarious other tracts, partly in German. - Graesse II, 490.€ 120
