The first Dutch pastoral novel, which served as a model for num. "arcadia" writers (up to the 19th c.). At the same time intended as a lesson in Dutch history. First publication (anonymously) in 1637; the author was rather ashamed of its "frivolity"; consequently, later ed. were augmented with long, learned notes by Van Baerle.€ 70
