By far the finest Dutch bird book of the 18th/19th century, with superb and large handcoloured plates. The splendidly engraved plates are most lively, depicting the birds in their natural environment, and as far as possible in their natural position, often together with their nests and eggs. The work was published in installments over a period of almost 60 years. Cornelius Nozeman (1720-1786), Remonstrant churchman and naturalist, began preparations for this bold enterprise in 1770, together with the German Christiaan Sepp (c. 1710-1775) and his son Jan Christiaan. After Nozeman died Martinus Houttuyn took over the editing of the book. When Houttuyn died in 1798 the work was continued very likely by the publishers with the assistence of C.J. Temminck, who supplied many descriptions. The publishing price of the five volume set was fl. 525,- which makes it the most expensive book for sale in Holland at that period. The plates in the first four volumes are fixed with their left/upper outer margins onto grey paper sheets in such a way that they can be displayed outside the book; the (fully margined) text-lvs. in these volumes are mounted on grey/blue paper stubs.
