Mungo Park (1771-1806), African explorer, set out on 2 Dec. 1795 on his journey of exploration for the African Association. This corporation which was supported by powerful and wealthy men, had been founded in 1788 for the purpose of furthering geographical discoveries in Africa. It was Park's task to ascertain the course of the river Niger. He eventually died on the same river, never having reached the end. - First Dutch edition. Cox I, 394ff; Kainbacher, 302 (German eds.).
