One of the most beautiful and rarest 19th c. plate books on professions, costumes and everyday life in 19th c. Indonesia lithographed in colour after drawings by Auguste van Pers (1815-1871). In total 56 plates were published for this publication of which the following are present: "Topping, Javanen elkander reinigende, De seninnan-ganger, De kodja, Soendasche vrouw met hare kinderen, Javasche kinderen die met snoeperij te koop lopen, Singo-sekars, Rong-Gengens in het binnenland van Java, De wisselaar, De Chinesche rondventer, Een Chinees in een tandoe, Een hadji, Javasche kinderen, De opiumschuivers, De waterdrager, De schutter, Een Javasche prins, Pangerang van Madura, Het wachthuis, De slavin, Batikster, Waschlieden, De lastdrager, De Afrikaansche soldaat, De palmwijnverkooper, Bedelaars, Huishoudsters, Chinezen bezig met het koa gong-gong spel". The work was dedicated by the author to the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies: Albertus Jacobus Duymaer van Twist (1809-1887) who was installed as such in 1851. This copy derives from the property of the Duymaer van Twist Family although not bearing any signs of this interesting provenance. The book may have been presented as is, but also may have been split in two parts due to inheritance. - Landwehr 392; Bastin & Brommer n497; Haks & Maris p. 208: "Well-known artist [Pers], and one of the most prolific of 19th c.
