HOMERUS -- WOOD, R. An essay on the original genius and writings of Homer: with a comparative view of the ancient and present state of the Troade. Lond., H. Hughs for T. Payne & P. Elmsly, 1775. (1), 342 pp. W. engr. front., 2 engr. vign. (1 on title) by Fr. Bartolozzi and 4 full-p. plates (2 fold.), probably all after G.B. Borra. Lge-4°. Cont. cf. The classical scholar, civil servant and politician Robert Wood (1716-1771) travelled as a young man through Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In 1750 he joined an antiquarian expedition to Asia Minor and Syria with two other scholars and the Italian architect and artist Giovanni Battista Borra, to explore the Troad in Northwestern Anatolia and visit the places that were mentioned by Homer. His 'Essay' marked a new stage in Homeric studies but also assisted the movement toward exploration of ancient sites in Greece. First edition. - Schweiger I, p.74; Hoffmann II, p. 383.
