Sm-8°. Cont. purple velvet bind. over wooden brds. w. solid golden clasps, catches and golden shoe along upper, outer and lower edges on both sides, gilt edges.
Bible with most elegantly executed solid gold work in Louis XVI style, made c. 1800 most probably by the Groningen silversmith Hendrik Willem van Giffen (1776-1854), active from 1793-1830 (clasps and catches in 4 places stamped with 'VG', cf. Van Rijen, Groninger keur, cat. nr. 94 & 235). To make the older gold work fit on the bible, the text was augmented at the end with c. 5 mm. of blank pages in order to gain height. The gold work consists of classical motifs like ram's heads and vases, alternated with foliage and floral ornaments. In impeccable condition.€ 2300
