Cesare Ripa (c.1560 - c.1620) wrote an iconological encyclopedia with an enormous amount of emblem-examples. The work was very popular and influential in the 17th and 18th century and was mainly used by visual artists, poets, orators etc. for the portrayal of concepts like passion, virtues and sin.
