From the library of Anna Roemer Visscher (probably beginning of 1584-1651) and with her signature on the lower margin of the engr. title. Anna was the oldest daughter, of three, of the wealthy Amsterdam merchant Roemer Visscher and his wife Margaretha Jans. She was thoroughly educated by her father, learned French and Italian, became famous for her glass engravings, and was i.a. skilled in painting, singing and swimming. Gerbrant Adriaensz. Bredero (1585-1618) was a friend of the Visscher family and dedicated his 'Lucelle' (1616) to Anna's sister Maria Tesselschade. This is the first collected and definitive edition of the famous 'Groot Lied-boeck' based on four earlier editions (first 3 editions not extant, 4th edition of utmost rarity). The fine engravings in this attractive 17th c. songbook represent all kinds of scenes relating to love and courtship. Partly printed in civilité type. - Unger, II-E; Scheurleer, 142,2; On the illustrators cf. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, Uit de wereld v.h. boek II, pp. 63-66.
