LOW COUNTRIES -- "LUGDUNUM BATAVORUM Anno 1670". (Amst., 1674). Plan of Leiden by C. Hagen in 4 engr. plates, each 485 x 610 mm (tog. 97 x 122 cm when conjoined). W. 4 elaborate cartouches in each corner, 1 of which has an index on buildings. -- Tog. w. 3 engr. plates, each c. 360 x 600 mm, representing the arms of Leiden, flanked left and right by 2 coats of arms of Leiden burgomasters: Van der Meer, Meerman, Van Groenendyck and Schuil. (Clean and w. ample margins, but w. some creasing and splits on blank margins in places).
One of the most impressive city plans of Leiden, the so-called 'Grote Hagen', made on a scale 1:1500 enabling Hagen to show lots of detail. On this plan the area where the 'kruitschip' (boat loaded with gunpowder) exploded in 1807 is marked with yellow and red colour wash and goes together with a ticket laid down in a small section of the plan with information on the loss of buildings; it may for that reason have been used by the Leiden authorities? Here without the 8 views and the profile of the city. - Groenveld, Lei 017.€ 1200
