GELLIUS, A. Noctes Atticae, seu Vigilae Atticae. (Ed.) H. Stephanus (Estienne). Par., 1585. (6), 23, (3), 587, (77), 16, (4), (4), 205, (3 blank) pp. Cont. limp vellum w. overl. sides. (Ties fail, some faint marg. stains, else fine).
The second part of the volume consists of Estienne's valuable commentary on 7 books of Gellius. 'Estienne has provided his text and the various parts of his commentary with several dedicatory prefaces, addressed to various prominent French magistrates; the longest and most interesting preface, however, is addressed to his son Paul. This famous preface is the most important autobiographical document Henri Estienne has left to us, and gives us our only glimpse into his father's household.' (Schreiber). Without the notes of Louis Carrion, ca. 1547-1595, which are promised on the title page. Carrion had promised Henri Estienne II, to manufacture notes for his Gellius edition. Estienne printed the text of Gellius, and waited eight months. Finally Estienne published his Gellius, replacing Carrion's notes with work of his own: 'Noctes aliquot Parisinae'. Ultimately Carrion sent Estienne notes concerning the first 24 chapters of the first book only (120 pp.). These notes Estienne thereupon published separately in the same year. Most copies are like ours, in only a few copies both works have been bound together. - Schreiber 212; Renouard 147:2; Brunet II, 1523; Adams G-366 (with L. Carrionis Castigationes pp.120 at end). - Ex libris N. Ribard.€ 450
