Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846) is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. Bessa was a student of the great engraver Gerard van Spaendonck and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. This work, his most remarkable, was patronized by the Duchesse de Berry and contains the same plates as Herbier General (Bessa's other very famous work, published between 1810 and 1827) with following additions all printed in small italics on each plate: habitat, date of flowering, and key to smaller dissection images. - Nissen, BBI, 161 (calls for 389 plates).
