The 'Biblia Naturæ' by Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) stands out because he was among the first people to study insects in a systematized fashion (i.e., careful dissection, comparison of different species), and because he used the microscope. In Swammerdam's days insects were still considered as unperfected animals. It was believed that they arose by fermentation from garbage or rotting meat. Swammerdam's proved otherwise and his anatomical and behavioral descriptions of bees, wasps, ants, dragonflies, snails, worms, and butterflies were major contributions to the nascent field of entomology in the late seventeenth century. Through the care of Herman Boerhaave the 'Biblia Naturæ' was published posthumously. First edition. Texts in Dutch and Latin. - Nissen 4055; Van Berkel 570-1. Sold w.a.f., not subject to return.
