MARITIME HISTORY - TRAVELLING -- VOC NOTEBOOK. Last quarter 18th c. W. 2 'wallets' made of goat skin and dec. paper at beginning and end, and 16 blank lvs., of which 6 w. a smooth white chalk ground surface. Sm-8° (133 x 81 mm). Black seal(?)skin over wooden boards, the front and back cover with central shaped oval plaque depicting an United East India Company vessel with VOC flag enclosed by scroll and shells, four silver clasps each with monogram 'V O C D' (Delft) and a silver stylus connecting the clasp and functioning as a catch. (1 clasp partly loose, some scribbling throughout on the blank leaves, 1 thinner leaf torn out, but in excellent condition).
Handsome notebook commissioned by the chamber of the Delft East India Company, which, according to Landwehr (VOC, p. xxvii), "possibly served as gifts for friends and relations of the directors". A similar notebook is depicted on page xxix of Landwehr's VOC, who also writes "Few VOC stamped bindings bearing the initials of the less important chambers, such as Delft and Rotterdam, have come to light." The silver work on this notebook was most probably done by Dirck van Hengel, but no marks visible. The scribbling reveals two dates: 1797 and 1798, and a name, partially readable as Petrus Johannes Slotis (?). No further relevant information found on the blank pages.€ 1200
