CHAMBER OF RHETORIC -- (KRUL, J.H.). Treur-Klacht van Liefd-Bloeyende. Amst., Pieter Iansz. Slyp, 1634. (2), 14 pp. W. ti-engr. ("De Oude Maeghd"). 4°. 19th c. h. mor. (Top of spine chipped, a bit chafed, margins cut, a bit browned).
Very rare early 17th-c. edition of a Dutch play. Ascribed to J.H. Krul. A poem actuated by the amalgation – for political and financial reasons – of all Amsterdam Rhetoric Chambers into "De Amsteldamsche Kamer" with the motto "Door Yver in Liefd Bloeyende". It is a lamentation on the new chamber, which deals too much little the art of rethorics, music, etc.: moreover, the meetings tend to degenerate into tumultuous carusals. According to Krul’s bibliographer H. van Bemmel (no. 230) only 5 copies are known. In the present copy (and some of the others) the date of 1634 has also been changed in ink to 1637. - Not in Van Doorninck nor De Kempenaar.€ 300
