CLICHTOVEUS, J. De doctrina moriendi opusculum, necessaria ad bene moriendum praeparamenta declarans: & quomodo in eius agone variis antiqui hostis insultibus sit resistendum, edocens. Par., O. Mallard for G. du Pré & J. de Roigny, 1538. 156, (4) lvs. Capital spaces w. guide letters (two clumsily filled in, otherwise empty), woodcut of Death on horseback on v° penultimate leaf. 16°. Mod. vellum. (Slightly browned, else a fine and clean copy).

Rare pocket edition of this popular Ars Moriendi by Jodocus Clichtoveus (Nieuwpoort, Flanders, 1472-1543), a pupil of J. Faber Stapulensis and one of the first authors in France to write against the Reformation. First published by Simon de Colines, the work was reprinted several times, also in pocket edition by De Colines in 1534, upon which the present one is based but with addition of the handsome dance-of-death woodcut at the end, which is reminiscent of the style of Geoffroy Tory. The printer of our edition, Olivier Mallard, succeeded Geoffroy Tory, whose widow he married. - Adams C-2183; Bibl. Belgica I, p. 606 (C435).
