KLOPSTOCK, (F.G.). De Messias. Vert. d. J. Meerman. The Hague, I. v. Cleef, 1803-15. 5 partis in 1 vol. W. stipple-engr. portr. of J. Meerman & 20 fine stipple-engr. plates under tissue guards by F. John after H. Füger, a.o. 4°. Cont. black h. mor. (Upper hinge partly split, lacking the portr. of Klopstock, some foxing to plates and tissues, but sound in bind. and clean). -- Added: the 5th part of the same work ('Narede' by Meerman), bound in a fine red mor. binding of the time. -- (2).

When the first three cantos appeared in 1748, it took the public a year to get accustomed to the novelty of the form and content, after which the poem's success was unprecedented; its readers awaited with impatience the next cantos. The poem became regarded in some circles as equal to the epics of Dante and Milton, especially by women and religious people.
