Presentation copy on the occasion of the foundation of the Leiden Student Society 'Exercendo' in 1854, inscribed and dated in gilt on front side. Exercendo was devoted to instilling style and outward eloquence among the student members. Johannes Jelgerhuis (1770-1836), Dutch painter-actor. He was the last great actor of the French-classicistic theatre. The plates show all kind of poses of bodies, hands, feet and faces. Cf. Scheen, 556-557. - Sold w.a.f., not subject to return.
