LESSING, G.E. Nathan der Weise. Ein dramatisches Gedicht, in fünf Aufzügen. (Berlin, C.F. Voss), 1779. (4), 276 pp. Sm-8°. Cont. cf., spine gilt and raised, sides ruled in gilt along borders, marbled endpapers. (Bind. slightly chafed on extremities, text slightly browned and w. some faint (water) staining in places, annotations in 18th c. hands on free endpapers at beginning and end, but a good copy).
First edition of Lessing's most famous play and a fervent plea for religious tolerance. Its performance was forbidden by the church during Lessing's lifetime (1729-1781) and its first performance was in 1783 in Berlin. With all the features of the first edition, such as the erroneous device "Jntroite, nam et heic Dii sunt!" (in stead of "Intrate, nam et hic dei sunt!") on the title-p., pagination incorrect after p. 122 ("223" in stead of 123), etc. Several inscriptions and quotations in old manuscript preceding the title. - Goedeke IV/1, 451 (171); Wilpert & Gühring 77.€ 500
