Charles Monselet 1825-1888, French journalist, novelist, poet and playwright, nicknamed "the king of the gastronomes" by his contemporaries. This work, on famous first performances from May 1857 to October 1864, is augmented with c. 68 tipped in manuscript letters by various persons from the world of theatre: writers, actors, journalists, etc. With contributions by Théophile Gautier, Eugène Scribe, Augustine Brohan, Arsène Houssaye, etc. From the library of Mathilde Diaz Velez (1899-1986), i.a. Argentinian impresario and philantropist, and with her bookplate. Curiously, the same work (from the library of Arsène Houssaye), also augmented with autograph letters in a similar way, was sold by Collin du Bocage (Paris): April 14th 2016, lot 228 (€ 2500).
