ALPHABET, ou A.B.C. pour la Ieunesse De Nouveau inventé & mis en lumière par Aert van Meldert, demourant a Rotterdam l'An 1585. Avec privilege pour iiii ans Van Doort excu. (Leiden (?), 1598-99). Calligraphed title (partly in green ink), and 24 calligraphed lvs. representing the letters of the alphabet, each letter being the initial letter of an elevating text ('exempel'). 8°-obl. In limp cont. manuscript bind. (Margins of lvs. a bit frayed/dam. in places, light staining throughout, a bit browned).

CALLIGRAPHY -- "PRANGER, Klaes tot Zunderdorp". 1744. Simple exercise booklet consisting of 15 calligraphed lvs., incl. 2 lvs. w. trompe-l'oeil's. 8°-obl. Cont. wrps (= faded and worn embossed brocade paper).

ETHIOPIC MANUSCRIPT, 19th/20th-c., consisting of 147 vellum & paper lvs. c. 140 x 103 mm, written area approximately 105 x 75 mm, 13 lines to a page. The text is written in Ge'ez script in black and red ink on vellum, but after leaf 87 also paper lvs. appear. W. 2 cold. drawings (on v° of lvs. 3 and 81) in ink on the last leaf. Bound in blind tooled red sheepskin over wooden brds. (Apart from some scribbling in ink in places it is a nice and well preserved copy). With matching leather pouch/slipcase w. carrying strip.

LETTER OF APPOINTMENT by the States General of the Netherlands for Adriaan van Helden as 'military engineer' or 'master of fortifications' (officier der genie), dated June 23rd 1786. 320 x 480 mm. Printed on vellum w. additions in ms. W. red wax seal (dam.). -- Added: Similar letter of appointment for the same as major general of the army ("major generaal over het volk van oorlog"), dated June 8th 1796. 725 x 387 mm. Written on vellum and signed by the president of the 'Nationale Vergaadering' J.A. de Vos van Steenwijk (1746-1813). W. large wax seal of the Batavian Republic. -- (2).

MARGARET OF PARMA (1522-1586). Letter in Italian to (?), signed 'Margarita', dated March (?) 17th 1572. 280 x 210 mm. Letter consisting of 5 lines in M.'s own hand on a double sheet of laid paper (watermarked with a crowned anchor), folded in four. With address (in the same hand) of a street in Rome (?) on v°-side. (Wax seal removed, margins a bit frayed in places, but in good condition).

MOROCCAN PRAYERBOOK, containing two so-called 'hirz' (=protective prayers, lit. 'amulet'). (1817). 30 lvs. thick Oriental paper (c. 80x75 mm), 9 or 10 lines w. Maghribi script in black, captions/decorations in red & green, second 'hirz' contains a few talisman-like drawings. Cont. blind tooled cf. w. flap. (Bind. a bit chafed in places, ends of flap slightly dam., first two lvs. a bit soiled, inner lower margin slightly dampstained, ink a bit ran out in places).

PETRUS LOMBARDUS -- FRAGMENT of a ms. in Latin by Peter of Lombard, written in England between 1250 and 1300 (perhaps Oxford/Cambridge?). Ms. on vellum, bifolium, gothic hand, w. fine pen-work initials in blue and red. Total size c. 210 x 320 mm. Some contemporary annotations in ink in the margins. (Small tear in the text, but without loss of text).
